This is a list of tires I have personally used on various
vehicles, and my impressions of them.
1965 MGB with OEM 14 x 4.5" 60-spoke wire wheels
Tire: Michelin XZX
Size: 165-14
Pressures: 28 PSI F, 32 PSI R
Impressions: Great handling and predictability, average grip
Tire: Michelin XZX
Size: 175-14
Pressures: 28 PSI F, 32 PSI R
Impressions: Same as above with added grip and braking ability.
Tire: Michelin MX4
Size: 175/70
Pressures: 30 PSI F/R
Impressions: Much improved ride quality, slightly more grip
than narrower tires, less predictability and more tire flex.
1965 MGB with Dunlop 15 x 5.5" x 72-spoke wire
wheels
Tire: Michelin Pilot
Size: 195/60R15
Pressures: 30 PSI F/R
Impressions: Excellent grip and balance, slightly more prone
to understeer than previously mentioned MX4 tires on 14"
wheels. Very precise steering in all situations. Slightly
more chop in rear on rough turns due to heavier wheels and
lower profile tires.
1967 MGB GT with 14 x 5" disc wheels
Tire: BF Goodrich T/A
Size: 185/70R14
Pressures: 28 PSI F, 30 PSI R
Impressions: Great ride, good handling, poor wet weather performance.
Tire: Sumitoyo HTR-200
Size: 185/70R14
Pressures: 29 PSI F, 32 PSI R
Impressions: Great handling, excellent balance in turns. Excellent
wet weather performance. Slightly harder ride at similar pressures
to previous BF Goodrich tires. Weak sidewalls make steering
less precise than I'd like. Requires higher pressures to prevent
sidewall flex, which makes stability poor. More flat-prone
than any other tire I've run, perhaps because of the thin,
weak construction. 185-width is noticably narrower than other
185 tires.
Tire: Bridgestone Turanza LS-H
Size: 195/60R14
Pressures: 27 PSI F, 29 PSI R
Impressions: A significantly stiffer tire than the Sumitomo,
partly due to lower profile but mostly because of a very rigid
construction. Grip may be slightly less than the previous
tire, but this is more than made up for by the very crisp
handling offered by the tire's stiff construction. Overall
grip is very good. More road noise than previous tire mainly
due to stiffness and wider profile. Not much experience in
wet weather yet but so far I'm very pleased. Tread pattern
looks more period-correct than many other tires.
1958 MGA Roadster with Dayton 15 x 4.5" 48-spoke
HD wire wheels
Tire: Dayton Daytona
Size: 165R15
Pressures: 28 PSI F, 30 PSI R
Impressions: Great ride. Quiet tread. Extremely predictable
handling with suprisingly good grip. Good tread wear.
1969 MGC GTS with Compmotive 15 x 8" Minilite-Style
Centerlocks
Tire: Bridgestone Potenza S-02
Size: 225/50R15
Pressures: 36 PSI F, 32 PSI R
Impressions: Decent ride with very good grip. Average predictability.
I had limited wet experience with these tires so no comment
in that area. These tires were not right for this car and
had a tendency to roll over in the front when pushed really
hard.
Tire: Dunlop Formula R D84
Size: 205/60R15
Pressures: 35 PSI F, 31 PSI R
Impressions: The best tire I have ever used. Ride quality
is very good considering how stiff these tires are. Grip is
excellent with wonderful balance and very sharp response.
The harder you push this tire, the more it will impress. My
only complaint is that I can't get it in smaller sizes for
the other cars!
